Awakening
colored pencil mandalas by Maia Apolonia
January 30 - March 1, 2008
Living the Mystery, Sun Salutation, Gaia
Maia Apolonia presents, Awakening, a one-of-a-kind hand-drawn series of mandala artwork done in colored pencil expertly blended into luminous color effects. Using layers upon layer of colors and shapes, each exquisitely executed drawing, precise yet organic, is intended to elicit a specific energy and have a harmonizing effect on the viewer. Maia’s work carries both power and universal simplicity by virtue of the circular form symbolic of essential qualities like unity, emptiness, and the creative power of the feminine often found in sacred art traditions around the world.
In 1992, Maia spontaneously developed a form of meditation through mandala drawing. Years later she discovered that her method was almost exactly the same as one practiced for thousands of years in India. Sometimes referred to as “painted prayers,” in India these mandalas are thought to offer blessings, longevity, prosperity, and protection. Maia holds a PhD in Transpersonal Psychology and has co-facilitated mandala workshops with Dr. Judith Cornell. She currently works with the Zen-inspired teachings of Adyashanti as the Creative Director of his organization.
